TarotThe three-card tarot spread: past, present & next step
You don't need a table-full of cards to get a useful reading. The three-card spread โ past, present, next-step โ is the workhorse of tarot for a reason: it's a complete little story in three beats, and it forces the reader to be specific.
The three positions
- 1 ยท Past โ the root of the situation. Not "your whole history", just the energy or choice still pulling on things now.
- 2 ยท Present โ what's genuinely live in the situation today, often the thing you can't quite see from the inside.
- 3 ยท Next step โ the direction the cards lean toward if you keep on the current course. It's a trajectory, not a fixed fate.
How to ask so the reading is worth something
Vague questions get vague answers. "Will I be happy?" is unanswerable; "What's getting in the way of my job search right now?" gives the cards something concrete to reflect. Frame it around one situation and, ideally, something you can act on.
Reading with real symbolism, not horoscope fluff
The difference between a good three-card reading and a fortune-cookie one is whether the reader actually uses the card: its imagery, its element, whether it's upright or reversed, and how it relates to the neighbours. A single card can mean "pause" in one spread and "a decision you've been avoiding" in another โ context is everything. That's why it helps to ask follow-ups: "go deeper on the middle card", "what would change the next-step card?"
Upright vs reversed
Reversed cards aren't automatically "bad". They usually read as the card's energy turned inward, blocked, or excessive. A good reader tells you which it looks like from the surrounding cards rather than applying a rulebook.
