Feng ShuiFeng Shui bedroom direction: where to place your bed
Most feng shui advice online is either superstitious noise or a wall of formulas. For the bedroom, though, it comes down to two things: a genuinely supportive position for the bed, and — if you want the classical layer — a direction that suits your life-gua.
Start with the commanding position
Before any compass work, place the bed so that when you lie down you can see the door without being directly in line with it. This is the "commanding position": you feel secure because you can sense what enters, but you're not in the full rush of energy straight off the doorway (classically called the "coffin position" when the feet point out the door). Solid wall behind the headboard, and not under a window, rounds it out.
Then add your life-gua (Eight Mansions)
Classical Ba Zhai (å…«å®…) feng shui assigns each person a life-gua from birth year and sex, sorting you into an East or West group with four supportive directions. Orienting the headboard (the direction you face as you lie back) toward one of your lucky directions is the traditional "sleep well" move:
- East-group guas generally favour East, Southeast, South, South West.
- West-group guas generally favour West, Northwest, Northeast, Southwest.
Which of the four is best for you depends on your exact gua number — each maps to a different kind of support (steady growth, relationships, career, health). That's precisely the kind of detail a reading pins down.
What to keep out of the bedroom
- Sharp angles and clutter aimed at the bed — the classic "poison arrow"; heavy shelves or a beam overhead read the same way.
- Large mirrors facing the bed — traditionally said to disturb rest; if you must keep one, angle it so it doesn't reflect you as you sleep.
- Water and screens — aquariums and glowing electronics by the head are considered poor for a space meant to settle.
Simple moves that count
Matched nightstands and paired bedside lamps (a relationship symbol), a solid headboard, clothes and electronics cleared from under the bed, and warm dimmable light. None of it needs a renovation — it's placement and tidiness, which is what feng shui mostly is.
