BaZi vs Zi Wei Dou Shu: which Chinese reading should you get?

Two engines, same fuel

Both systems take your birth year, month, day and hour. BaZi turns that into four pillars of stems and branches and reads the Day Master's strength and relationships through the five elements. Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗数, "Purple Star Astrology") places a set of stars into twelve palaces — self, wealth, career, property, partnerships, and so on — and reads the map area by area.

BaZi: the weather and the season

• Great for — the big picture: your core nature, which elements support you, and the timing of luck across ten-year pillars and each year.
• Feels like — a climate read. It tells you whether it's a favourable "season" for a move, and what kind of environment your Day Master thrives in.
• Ask it — "What work suits my nature?", "Is this a good year to change jobs?", "Which elements balance me?"

Zi Wei Dou Shu: the room-by-room floor plan

• Great for — specificity by life area. Because it's organised into palaces, it's naturally good at "how does this show up in my career palace vs my wealth palace?"
• Feels like — a floor plan. Each room has its own stars and its own quality; the four transformations show where energy moves between rooms.
• Ask it — "What's the texture of my relationships palace?", "Where does money actually flow for me?", "Which palace is this year activating?"

Which to start with

If you want a crisp read on timing and your elemental nature, start with BaZi. If you want a detailed tour of specific life areas, start with Zi Wei. They complement each other — plenty of people ask both about the same question and enjoy how the two lenses agree or differ. On The Oracle, both are free, so there's no reason to choose.
